SI names room in honor of Daniel E. Atkins

(Nov 2006)  A conference room at the School of Information North has been named in honor of Daniel E. Atkins, professor and founding dean of the School.

A plaque citing Atkins for his achievements was unveiled at the School's "Celebrate SI" event on Saturday, October 14. On hand for the presentation were his mother, Grace Atkins, daughter Susan Atkins, and Susan's husband Michael Fainter.

As founding dean of the School of Information from 1992-98, Atkins guided the expansion of the Master of Science in Information program to prepare students for a broad range of information professions. Previously he served as associate dean for research and interim dean at the College of Engineering.

Atkins is now on leave from SI to serve a two-year appointment as director of the Office of Cyberinfrastructure for the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C.

The inscription on the plaque reads:

"Dan Atkins was the founding dean of the new School of Information at the University of Michigan, the first school of its kind in the nation. The symbol above is called the Borromean Rings, a set of three rings, interlocking such that the removal of any ring causes all three to separate. It is the symbol that Dan chose as an important intellectual signifier of the spirit of the new school. The three rings represent people, technology, and information. Only when the three are interlocked can value be created for society. This room is named in tribute to Dan's vision and determination."
