Technology at SI
The School of Information connects people, information, and technology in more valuable ways, so our commitment to supporting and deploying the best in technology -- often in collaboration with the wider University community -- is central to our mission.
SI has an IT support staff of five full-time people who provide computing, audiovisual, and teleconferencing technical support for our faculty, staff, and students. The University of Michigan also has the Information Technology Central Services → (ITCS) group of more than 600 people who provide these services, in addition to telecommunications, systems research, and strategic network planning.
IT support at the School is provided by both entities; SI takes care of faculty and staff home directories, while ITCS is responsible for student home directories. Hardware and software are purchased and maintained by SI Computing staff, at times with the support of ITCS. ITCS maintains the dial-in pool for the University as well as a common pool of site-licensed software available for departmental use. SI purchases and supports additional software on an as-needed basis.

Computing Facilities
The University of Michigan maintains a variety of computing sites on the Central and North campuses. The sites feature workstations appropriate for the widest range of applications, including multimedia, specialized computing applications, and class-specific programs.
SI has a dedicated Digital Information Access and Dissemination (DIAD) computing lab as well, which is available for training sessions and for general student use nearly 24 hours a day during most of the year. The DIAD includes 40 workstations that feature both Macintosh and Windows machines loaded with a wide range of software.

The DIAD Lab is available to SI students from 8 a.m. to 5 a.m. daily. Students often collaborate on their group projects.
