Student groups

When you come to SI, you are automatically a member of the School of Information Student Association, or SISA. In addition, you may join the other social and professional organizations listed below that address your specific interests. As a U-M student, you are also eligible to join other student groups throughout the University.

  • American Library Association (ALA)

    The student chapter of the ALA offers students free membership and special programming on the U-M campus. Contact: alaofficers@umich.edu.

     

  • Community Information Corps (CIC)

    The Community Information Corps is an interdisciplinary group of information professionals who learn, share, and apply new techniques in the service of public goals. Contact: si-cic-officers@umich.edu.

     

  • Doctoral Student Organization (DSO)

    The DSO provides referrals to fellow students who have experience with various procedures and classes, serves as a forum for dissertation discussions, and sponsors an annual convocation.

     

  • Health Informatics Society (HISO)

    The Health Informatics Society (HISO) serves as a forum for community-building, skill development, networking, and student projects in the growing field of health informatics.

     

  • Informatics Student Organization

    The Informatics Student Organization is dedicated to the advancement and development of society by engaging in projects that consider new approaches to dealing with contemporary, societal problems.

     

  • Lavender Information and Library Association (LILA)

    LILA promotes awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues within SI and the University Library system through education, research, networking, and social activities.

     

  • Multi-ethnic Information Exchange (MIX)

    MIX works to strengthen the social capital of minority students at SI and to serve as an academic, social, and professional support system.

     

  • School of Information Global Network (SIGN)

    SIGN provides support and serves as a social hub for international students and their friends at SI. 

     

  • School of Information Student Association (SISA)

    SISA serves as the liaison to SI, sponsors social events, invites guest speakers, and appoints members to various School committees.

     

  • SI Create

    SI Create is a student-driven community designed to support and enhance innovation at the School of Information, by connecting with resources and people in the broader University of Michigan campus and professional community. Contact: officers@si-create.com.

     

  • Social Computing at the School of Information (SCSI)

    SCSI provides a venue for students to engage in activities that enhance their academic experience, their career and professional development, and their opportunities to network and socialize.

     

  • Society of American Archivists (SAA)

    SAA introduces and integrates new students into the archival profession and provides an additional focus for students to discuss archival issues, identify with the profession, and engage in professional activities.

     

  • Special Libraries Association (SLA)

    SLA provides students with information about careers in special libraries and organizes activities such as guest speakers, field trips, and social events.

     

  • Student Organization for Computer-Human Interaction (SOCHI)

    SOCHI organizes events for peer advising, networking, and academic and career development for students in the HCI specialization. Contact: sochi-officers@umich.edu.

     

  • Student Organization for Information Analysis and Retrieval

    SOIAR provides academic, career-oriented and social opportunities for students specializing and/or interested in Information Analysis and Retrieval at the School of Information. Contact: si.soiar@umich.edu .

     

  • Students Interested in Information Policy (SIIP)

    SIIP is an organization that provides a forum for the exploration of policy issues related to all areas of information study.

     

  • Youth and School Librarians (YASL)

    YASL supports students interested in seeking careers as youth and/or school librarians. Group members can share ideas, socialize, and develop plans to change the youth/school librarian world. Contact: yaslofficers@umich.edu.
