Google

Google logo Not only has Google established a strong partnership with the community by opening a local office in Ann Arbor and with the University of Michigan Libraries through the Digitization Project, they have established a strong recruiting relationship with the University of Michigan School of Information as well.

Over the past few years, Google has heavily recruited SI students for internships and full-time positions in the areas of usability and design and for the Google Book Search Project.

Google makes multiple recruiting visits to the University of Michigan every year. During those visits, Google makes a concentrated effort to visit SI for presentations and information sharing with SI masters and PhD students.

SI alumni, and current Googlers, continue to show their support of SI and our students through recruitment efforts and by mentoring students through the SI Student-Alumni Network.

Every summer we can count on a handful of SI students heading to Mountain View, California, to gain valuable internship experiences. These Google internships have proven to greatly influence students' career development, marketability, job readiness, and future job search decisions.

Student testimonials

"I just couldn't imagine working for a better company with better people, or having an experience that was so fulfilling and enriching both academically, professionally, and personally."
-- Google Usability Intern, Summer 2006

"This internship has completely reconfirmed my passion for usability and reminded me that a challenging, supportive, and fun work environment can really make all the difference in a career experience."
-- Google Usability Intern, Summer 2006

Google clearly sees SI as a great pool of candidates to tap into to meet their organizational goals and needs to provide "quick and direct access to information." What better place to recruit for those needs than the School of Information?

[of the U-M/Google digital library partnership] "I'm hesitant to speculate, but I do think one of the greatest effects of this project will be to unlock information that has effectively been hidden in books for decades. As the contents of low-circulation books are made available for full-text search, I think we'll see a lot of new research that draws from these 'lost' sources, so I think it's likely that we'll see an increase in circulation of these more obscure titles, both in-house and through interlibrary loan."
