Dual-Degree Programs
The School of Information now offers six dual-degree programs to help you create specialized academic programs to meet your specific career interests.
Our most recent addition to our formal dual-degree program is the Master of Science in Information in conjunction with the Medical Degree (MD) at the U-M Medical School. In the meantime, you can learn more about the MD/MSI program.
You can also earn the Master of Science in Information in conjunction with either the Master of Business Administration from the Business School, the Master of Public Policy from the School of Public Policy, the Juris Doctor from the Law School, the Master of Social Work from the School of Social Work, or the Master of Science in Nursing from the School of Nursing.
Credit requirements and the length of time required to earn the degrees vary depending on the dual-degree combination. All programs require that students take courses in both schools and that students qualify for admission in both schools. The advantages for students are that the total number of credits required is significantly less than if both degrees were earned independently.
The dual-degree programs are a natural development for the School of Information. Many faculty members who teach in SI also have appointments in the School of Public Policy and the Business School, for example, and have brought their expertise to SI classrooms. In addition, adjunct lecturers from the Law School have taught courses dealing with information and law at SI. And medical information has long been an area of specialty within SI.
In developing the dual degree with the Business School, the faculty noted that there is a demand for programs in electronic commerce, which includes courses in information economics, information ethics and policy, systems analysis and design, management of technology resources, knowledge management, and development of complex Web sites.
Students pursuing the dual degree with the School of Public Policy will study information and information technologies as well as the policy and regulatory aspects of using them. These new information professionals and policy analysts will have the tools for measuring and managing complex issues and the ability to answer high-level questions of efficiency and equality.
The dual degree with the Law School is one of only a few of its type offered anywhere. The degree will be particularly attractive to students who wish to develop their expertise in the field of intellectual property, especially as it relates to cyberspace and other technological advances. Students who complete the program will qualify for careers in such wide-ranging places as the U.S. Justice Department and "boutique" Internet-provider firms.
The dual degree program with the School of Nursing offers those who have earned a baccalaureate degree in nursing further interdisciplinary preparation for the information age in both nursing systems and information management. It is designed to meet the needs of students who desire preparation in both clinical management and information management areas. The MSN portion of the degree is earned via a Web-based program.
SI also offers a dual degree with the School of Social Work. The degree provides academic training and practical experience to improve social workers' effectiveness when dealing with information issues and extends the reach of information specialists in furthering the public good.
