Dual Degree in Information and Business Administration

The U-M Ross School of Business → and the School of Information offer a dual-degree program that enables you to pursue concurrent work in information and business, leading to a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in Information. The program is arranged so that all requirements for both degrees can be completed in six terms of enrollment.

If you elect this dual-degree program, you are required to earn credits in each school by taking coursework as follows:
  • Required courses plus electives totaling 45 credit hours taken in the Business School.
    • The 31.5 credit hour MBA core (no credit is awarded for Business Administration core courses successfully waived; credit must be earned with Business electives)
    • 13.5 elective hours in Business Administration
    • 15 credit hours of transferable electives from the School of Information (a "transferable elective" merely means a graduate course)
  • All requirements for the MSI plus electives totaling 32 credits must be taken at SI.
If you are admitted to the combined program, you are required to complete the first-year courses in one school during the first year, and to complete the first-year courses at the other school in the second year. The purpose of this is to give you some coherence in their programs and to gain a sense of belonging to a community. You may begin at either school. Each school will applies its own deferred admission standards to students who elect to take the first year in the other school.

During the third year of the program, you are permitted to elect courses in either school, as you are in the earlier years if you place out of core courses. You are generally not restricted in your choices beyond fulfilling the requirements above.

If you are interested in the joint program, you must gain separate and independent admission to both the School of Information and the Business School. You must take the GRE and the GMAT for admission to both schools. In addition, you must indicate on both applications that you are applying for the dual-degree program. The application fee can be paid to either of the two schools. Students who are registered in the first year at SI or UMBS may also apply to the dual-degree program by applying to the other school and indicating their desire to complete the dual degree.

Rationale

Technology has transformed business. Many schools are engaged in developing programs in electronic commerce, which include courses in information economics, information ethics and policy, systems analysis and design, the management of technology resources, knowledge management, and development of complex Web sites, all adding to the traditional offerings in business. At Michigan, the existence of both the first-rate Business School and the pioneering curriculum of the School of Information make the formation of this curriculum natural. Courses taught in one school need not be taught in duplicate at the other school. Students wishing to show the depth of their training in both disciplines will elect a dual degree, culminating in the MBA and the MSI.
