Library and Information Services Specialization Requirements

General MSI Requirements
(for students entering Fall 2007 or later)

All MSI students who enter in Fall 2007 or later must complete at least 48 credit hours of graduate coursework, including
  • 2 core courses (SI 500 and SI 501)
  • 1 core technology course (SI 502; may be waived based on test)
  • 1 management course (view list)
  • 1 methods course (view list)
  • 3 credits in cognate courses taken elsewhere at U-M (B- or better required)
  • 6 credits that meet Practical Engagement requirements, through credit-based internships or class-based experiential learning

These general MSI program requirements became effective for the 2007-2008 academic year. (View general MSI requirements for students who entered prior to Fall 2007.)

Additional LIS Requirements

Students specializing in LIS must take a total of at least 15 credits in LIS specialization courses, which are listed below. These credits should include at least three of the four highly recommended courses, which are shown in boldface below. These highly recommended courses are gateway courses in the three LIS areas of focus. LIS students must take at least one course in each of these three LIS areas of focus.

  • SI 531: Human Interaction in Information Retrieval (3 credits)
  • SI 572: Database Application Design (3 credits)
  • SI 639: Web Archiving (1.5 credits)
  • SI 650: Information Retrieval (3 credits)
  • SI 658: Information Architecture (3 credits)
  • SI 665: Online Searching and Databases (3 credits)
  • SI 666: Organization of Information Resources (3 credits)

Area 2

Recorded knowledge: content and collections
  • SI 579: Government Information: Issues, Resources, and Policy (3 credits)
  • SI 581: Preserving Information (1.5 credits)
  • SI 586: Music Bibliography (3 credits)
  • SI 596: Digital Librarianship (3 credits)
  • SI 615: Special Topics: Digital Libraries (3 credits)
  • SI 620: Collection Development and Management (3 credits)
  • SI 624: Media for Children and Young Adults (3 credits)
  • SI 633: History of Books and Printing (3 credits)
  • SI 641: Instructional Design for Information Skills (3 credits)
  • SI 644: Advanced Preservation Administration (1.5 credits)
  • SI 647: Information Resources and Services (3 credits)
  • SI 675: Digitization for Preservation (1.5 credits)

Area 3

Information needs, uses, and environments
  • SI 518: Special Topics: Seminar on Library Leadership (1.5 credits)
  • SI 551: Information-Seeking Behavior (3 credits)
  • SI 623: Outcome-based Evaluation of Programs and Services (3 credits)
  • SI 626: Management of Specialized Information Services (3 credits)
  • SI 638: School Library Media Management (3 credits)
  • SI 643: Professional Practice in Libraries and Information Centers (3 credits)
  • SI 645: Information Use in Communities (3 credits)
