"The Political Ecology of Estimated Truth: What Modeling Does(n't) Do"

The second word in the noun phrase "social justice" quickly takes us to "judgment." The modeling world is very familiar with judgment. But judgment variables don't hold the status in modeling that non-judgment variables hold. It's not that one can't build models that incorporate concerns about social justice. Such models just tend to lose out in head-to-head competition with models based on non-judgment variables. Professor King will discuss these patterns, and the contributing factors.

Professor King is the William Warner Bishop Collegiate Professor of Information at the School of Information.
