SI SpotlightJames Ungar (MSI '04)
"The U-M reputation and the HCI program helped land the job -- the things I learned at SI gave me the skills to perform it effectively. I use (and share with others) a very wide variety of the skills I learned at SI, and I use them everyday."

Before SI: Jim's first career was working as a chef. He holds a bachelor's degree in computer information systems and was a programmer for a few years before SI, too.
At SI: You can choose from a lot of courses at SI and make many discoveries, as Jim found while specializing in Human-Computer Interaction.
"The sheer breadth and depth of Professor George Furnas' MoRAS course opened my eyes to the size and complexity of the HCI universe," Jim says.
Also valuable to him were interacting with people at Ford Motor Company and the U-M Survey Research Center while working on class projects. Jim also obtained an internship at Sandia National Laboratories, where he put his new knowledge to use for the first time in a professional capacity.
"Oddly enough, for an HCI specialist," he says, "my favorite project was an archive research project where I worked closely with Associate Professor Margaret Hedstrom and the curators at the U-M Special Collections Library."
Jim recommends that SI students take the time to see what's around them, outside the classroom.
"Explore the campus. Open doors. Talk to faculty (they don't bite). U-M and SI have more to offer than anyone can possibly experience in two short years. Find your own hidden gems."
After SI: Now is a user interface engineer for Jewelry Television in Knoxville, Tennessee.
