Housing

The Housing Information Office is the primary source of information for all facets of housing for students and other interested parties on the Ann Arbor campus. The office provides information, advising, and assignments for on-campus family housing and listings for off-campus housing.

Prospective students interested in the housing market may review information online through the University Housing → site. Housing advisors are available at all times during regular office hours to assist you. The University Housing Information Office is at 1011 Student Activities Building. Advisors can be contacted at:
The median rental rate for a room in a house in this area is $500 per month. Median rental rates for other types of housing:
  • Efficiency/studio: $650/month
  • One-bedroom apartment: $725/month
  • Two-bedroom apartment: $990/month
  • For more information see University Housing's 2004 rent survey →

The U-M Office of Financial Aid also posts information on cost of attendance →, which includes estimates for student budgets.

Eligible graduate students may choose Family Housing on North Campus, which provides reasonably priced, quality housing for student families new to the University community, as well as the support services they will need to maintain an optimal living environment while pursuing academic programs. The Family Housing population is predominantly enrolled in graduate and professional degree programs in almost all of Michigan's schools and colleges.

The University has efficiency, one-, and two-bedroom apartments, and two- and three-bedroom townhouses. Furnished and unfurnished units are available. Parking is available for most apartments. Pets (except for fish in aquariums 30 gallons or smaller) are not allowed. A limited number of accessible apartment units for students with disabilities are available.

University Family Housing assignments are made as vacancies occur, and it is often difficult for the Housing Office to give as much advance notice about an assignment as it would like. In most cases the Housing Office can give approximately a 30-day notice. Tenants may occupy Family Housing units year-round, and will typically sign a lease that is for the length of time from when the apartment is first available through the following June 30. Prior to the expiration of the lease, tenants must apply for a lease renewal or submit a withdrawal notice. Students may apply for a maximum of five lease renewals, while staff members may apply for a maximum of two lease renewals.

A lease may be terminated by the student at any time with a 45-day written notice. If the termination occurs within the first four months of occupancy, the tenant will be subject to a $150 cancellation fee. After the four-month mark, there is no penalty for terminating a lease, only the requirement for a 45-day written notice. Costs vary depending on the size of the unit, whether it is furnished or unfurnished, and whether the tenant is a student or a staff member.

More comprehensive and detailed information about the University Family Housing is available from the Housing Office. You may request a Family Housing booklet and payment schedule, or talk with one of the housing advisors about your specific concerns.
