Tuition and funding

Tuition for the School of Information's Master of Applied Data Science (MADS) online degree program reflects the quality and value expected from a Michigan education.

We offer competitive tuition rates for both in-state and out-of-state students. Because U-M is partially state-funded, State of Michigan residents pay a lower rate. The rates are the same whether you take classes full or part-time.

2024-2025 academic year

The total cost of the 34-credit degree program for the 2024-2025 academic year, based on this year's rates before fees, is approximately $37,638 ($1,107 per credit hour) for in-state students and approximately $50,184 ($1,476 per credit hour) for out-of-state students.

Fees include an infrastructure maintenance fee of $185.00 and an additional $166.19 in university fees, both of which are assessed once per semester. These fees are the same for both in-state and out-of-state students. For example, a full time, out-of-state student who has registered for 12 classes during the winter 2025 semester would expect to be charged $18,063.19 (12 x $1,476 + $185 + $166.19).

Tuition and fees are set by the U-M Office of the Registrar and approved by the University of Michigan Regents. Each year, near the beginning of the fall term, updated tuition and fees are posted on the Registrar's website.

Unlike most online degree programs, the MADS program offers scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 in addition to other types of financial aid. All applicants are automatically considered for merit-based tuition scholarships.
