BET broadcast features UMSI student in conversation with Michelle Obama

Monday, 01/17/2022

In November, University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI) senior Joshua Mollison represented the University of Michigan in a live conversation with Michelle Obama and students from colleges nationwide. The Q&A-style event, BECOMING: Michelle Obama in Conversation, centered on lessons from Obama’s memoir, Becoming, and was moderated by producer, actress and Harvard University student Yara Shahidi.

The event is scheduled to broadcast on Monday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. EST on BET and BET Her, kicking off what BET has declared “the year of the student.”

The airing on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2022 also serves as an opportunity for Josh to reflect on what the experience means to him as he enters his final semester as a Bachelor of Science in Information student.

“Just being able to have those conversations with someone who’s been so historically significant, having that kind of direct advice given to me was a huge takeaway,” he says.

Josh, a James B. Angell scholar, member of the School of Information Bachelor's Association (SIBA) and Black@SI, and student representative to UMSI’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, says that as a UMSI senior looking toward his next move, the conversation was a grounding reminder of the core values he seeks to bring into every space.

Josh says, “Everything from the conversation is something that I will never forget.”
