UMSI research opportunities

Research Experience Development Program

The Research Experience Development Program (REDP) offers an excellent opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to explore the academic research process and prepare for pursuing doctoral studies. 

You’ll be paired with an experienced UMSI researcher, developing research skills while providing valuable assistance. Through the program and a combined course, you will engage in a range of research activities, receive close mentorship and explore crucial issues in information science. Applications are accepted at the beginning of each semester in M-Compass.

Eligibility: BSI, MSI and MHI students 

Program development and student awards are supported by the RJ Jain UMSI Research Fund. 

Independent Study

Explore a research area or topic not offered through an existing course, earning credits toward your degree while receiving mentorship from a faculty member. Typically an independent study involves writing a substantial research paper or conducting research.

Eligibility: BSI, MSI, MHI and MADS students with faculty permission 

Master's Thesis Option Program 

Work closely with a faculty advisor to conduct original research and write a thesis. You will apply to the Master's Thesis Option Program at the end of your first year and, if accepted, enroll in the MTOP course in the fall and winter terms of your second year.

UMSI Teresa Noel Urban Blaurock Student Research Award

The Teresa Noel Urban Blaurock Student Research Award recognizes UMSI undergraduate and master's students engaged in research projects with UMSI researchers. The award was created to honor excellence in UMSI student research projects. 

Grant funding is awarded annually to recognize research projects that students have undertaken in the current academic year. The award amount varies depending on the number of selected candidates, ranging from $500 to $1000 per award. Learn more and apply in M-Compass.

U-M research opportunities

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program

The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) creates research partnerships between first- and second-year students and University of Michigan faculty and research scientists. All schools and colleges of the University of Michigan are active participants in UROP, providing a wealth of research topics for you to choose from. 

Graduate Education Preparation Program

The Graduate Education Preparation Program (GEPP) is a two-year, cohort-based model, designed to increase access to advanced degrees. This program specifically seeks to support students who have experienced financial hardship as a result of family economic circumstances and/or are first generation in their families to graduate from a four-year college. 

Summer Research Opportunity Program

The University of Michigan Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) offers outstanding undergraduates underrepresented in their field of study the opportunity to conduct intensive research across a variety of disciplines. The goal is to prepare you for advanced studies in a PhD program at U-M.
