University of Michigan School of Information professor Cliff Lampe has earned a 2026 Association for Computer Machinery Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI) Lifetime Service Award.

The award recognizes individuals who have contributed to the growth and success of SIGCHI in a variety of capacities and honors the extended service to the community at large over a number of years.

Awardees will be celebrated at the 2026 CHI conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. The conference will take place in Barcelona, Spain.

“I'm very honored to have received the SIGCHI Lifetime Service award this year,” Lampe says. “I've been working on SIGCHI service for a long time, and this recognition feels very special.”

“I feel slightly guilty though, because I feel like academic service has always given me more than what I've had to invest into it. I've met amazing people from a wide variety of research areas. I've been able to enact changes I wanted to see in my field. I've had the opportunity to support people, and to be supported by them.”

Over the years, Lampe has held numerous leadership roles within SIGCHI and its conferences. As early as 2006, he served as a student volunteer chair for CHI, where he put in a management structure that survives to this day. He’s also served as the chair of the CSCW steering committee and papers chair for the CSCW conference. There, he removed page limits on papers and helped establish a revise and submit process.

Additionally, Lampe served as vice president for publications for the SIGCHI Executive Committee, where he helped establish the Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction and served as its first editor-in-chief. He later served as executive vice president for SIGCHI, technical program chair for CHI in 2016 and 2017 and general chair for CHI 2022, in addition to many years on the CHI steering committee, including as chair.
