Cohn: People will lie about vaccination status

After the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s announcement that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask in most places, people have raised concerns that unvaccinated Americans will lie about their vaccine status. According to the experts, many people will.

University of Michigan Assistant Professor Alain Cohn, spoke with USA Today about a person’s proclivity to lie when it benefits themselves. Most places in the U.S. are operating on an honor-roll system where there is no punishment for lying about vaccine status. 

"There is this universal or global phenomenon that people have a strong desire to see themselves as honest. The big problem is how to activate and make sure people cannot rationalize a bad behavior. They can always find a good reason why it’s OK to lie or tell a half-truth."
