Dug Song to speak at 2023 commencement

The 2023 graduate recognition ceremony of the School of Information will take place on Thursday, April 27 at 10 a.m. in Crisler Center, 333 E Stadium Blvd, in Ann Arbor. 

The graduation speaker will be Dug Song, an expert in security and privacy. Dug is the co-founder of Duo Security, a cybersecurity company that protects digital access by verifying the identity of users and the safety of their devices. After the acquisition of Duo Security by Cisco in 2018, Dug served as the chief strategy officer for Cisco’s global security business. 

He is currently the co-founder and president of the Song Foundation, which invests in the innovative people and organizations advancing justice and equity in Southeast Michigan. Dug also serves on the executive board of the Wallace House for Journalists, and on the advisory board of Venture for America in Detroit. Dug is heavily involved in the startup community in Michigan as an active investor, advisor and board member. He is co-founder of the Michigan Founders Fund, helping entrepreneurs turn business success into community wealth, and also serves on the boards of the Detroit Regional Chamber, and the National Advisory Council for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the US Department of Commerce, with a focus on racial justice and economic equity.

He is a University of Michigan Residential College alum, graduating with a Bachelor of Computer Science in 1997. He is also an avid skateboarder.

More than 700 students in the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs are expected to graduate from UMSI this spring, the largest class to date. 

UMSI will also celebrate 2023 graduates with a reception on Thursday, April 27 from 5:30-7 p.m. EDT at Ingalls Mall. The 2023 UMSI MADS reception will take place on Wednesday, April 26 from 4-6 p.m. EDT in North Quad Space 2435.
