By Noor HindiAssociation for Computing Machinery has named University of Michigan School of Information professor Eytan Adar a 2025 ACM Fellow for his foundational research in data mining, data visualization and social computing.
"I am honored and grateful to receive this recognition,” Adar says. “Getting to this point in my career while still loving the work wouldn't be possible without so many great mentors, collaborators, colleagues and students. I’m really fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful and talented people that have shaped my work."
The ACM Fellows program recognizes the top 1% of ACM Members for their outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology. Fellows are nominated by their peers, with nominations reviewed by a distinguished selection committee.
“These men and women represent the top 1% of professionals in our association,” explained ACM President Yannis Ioannidis. “I personally enjoy reviewing the list of achievements of the new Fellows because it offers a snapshot of what’s happening in our field at the moment.”
Adar’s accomplishments in the field of computing are vast. His nomination letter, written by UMSI professor Paul Resnick, acknowledges that Adar stands at the forefront of research that impacts how people produce, navigate and interact with information in our digital era. His work has advanced the boundaries of computer and information sciences, improving how we interact with, learn from and shape the information landscape.
Adar holds more than two dozen patents and his scholarship includes more than 150 publications. At UMSI, Adar’s service and leadership have been celebrated with a Michael D. Cohen Outstanding Service Award.
Outside of UMSI, Adar is the co-founder of the International Conference on Web and Social Media. There, he guided its growth as one of the most influential conferences in social media research.
He has also served as general chair of the ACM Web Search and Data Mining conference, and continues to hold numerous senior and associate chair roles for prominent ACM and affiliated conferences.
