Here's how you can support UMSI students this Giving Blueday
Tuesday, 03/12/2024
By Abigail McFeeOn Giving Blueday — the University of Michigan’s annual day of giving — alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the School of Information will come together globally to support what they love about UMSI. The special 10th anniversary of Giving Blueday is Wednesday, March 13, from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. EDT.
This year, UMSI invites donors to directly support students through gifts to one of five funds.
Student Emergency Fund
Established in 2020 during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, this fund continues to provide emergency financial support to students facing unforeseen expenses. A contribution to the Student Emergency Fund ensures that students can have the safety net they need to focus on their education and work.
This year, UMSI advisory board members John Cameron (BSE '66, MSE '67, MBA '71), Marla A. Gomez (AB '94, MSI '04) and Tom Wilson (MILS ‘87) will match all gifts to any UMSI fund with a gift to the UMSI Student Emergency fund 1:1 up to $8,000.
UMSI Annual Fund
This flexible fund supports the highest priorities that arise within the UMSI community throughout the year. Gifts to the Annual Fund allow UMSI to say “yes” to engaged learning opportunities like Alternative Spring Break and study abroad, and to enrich students’ education by bringing thought leaders to campus.
This year, UMSI advisory board member Steve Tuohy will match all gifts made to any UMSI fund with a gift to the UMSI Annual Fund 1:1 up to $2,500.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Fund
Gifts to the DEI Fund equip UMSI’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office with the funding they need to advance their goal of expanding and supporting diversity within the UMSI community. Students can also apply to use these funds for student-led DEI activities. This support helps create a welcoming, accepting, anti-racist environment for UMSI students, faculty and staff.
Graduate Scholarship Fund
Without scholarship support, an education at UMSI is not possible for some students who possess the potential to become leaders in the field of information. Gifts to this fund ensure UMSI’s programs are available to individuals from various economic backgrounds and helps fulfill our commitment to accessibility.
Undergraduate Scholarship Fund
By alleviating some of the financial pressure on undergraduate students, scholarship support empowers them to make choices based on their values, skills and goals, instead of their debt. Often, scholarship support is what enables a student to receive an education at U-M and allows them to pursue opportunities outside of the classroom that may have otherwise been out of reach.
Carry the UMSI legacy
As an expression of gratitude, donors who contribute $75+ to UMSI this Giving Blueday will receive an exclusive tote bag designed by Avalon Hu (MSI ‘11), senior product designer for Adobe Illustrator.
What I remember the most about UMSI is teamwork and tons of collaboration with people from all kinds of backgrounds and focuses. We get to learn new skills and explore new technologies together, we fail and succeed together, we try to have fun too while going through this intense phase of growth, and we become lifelong friends.
