The University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI) has a variety of student organizations to support our students’ professional goals and interests. Participating in a student organization is an excellent way to make friends, build leadership skills and gain real-world experience outside of the classroom.

“We have so many student organizations to offer,” says Allison Sweet, assistant director of student life at UMSI. “Our student orgs are a great way to meet people, engage with a closer-knit community and work on tangible projects.”

With the many student groups operating on campus at UMSI, there is a student organization for just about everyone.

For students passionate about the intersection of data, technology and sports, the Michigan Sports Analytics Society offers the opportunity to work with data sets from the NBA and the NHL.

The mission of the American Library Association Student Chapter is to promote awareness of, interest in, and involvement in libraries, librarianship, and information services among all students at the University of Michigan School of Information. The group’s focus is on creating spaces for discussing relevant issues and providing opportunities for professional development.

The student-run A2 Data Dive group facilitates collaboration, practical education and service events that increase data literacy in the community.  A2D2 spreads a spirit of shared learning by bringing together data professionals, faculty, students and local nonprofit organizations. Their annual service event, Data Dive, offers opportunities to partner with nonprofit organizations and participate in hackathons to solve problems with students and community members.

Alpha Theta Delta is the University of Michigan’s professional fraternity for multidisciplinary design. Focusing on design in a wide range of media, members spend time learning from each other’s design experiences. These experiences include virtual design such as user experience and website and app interface design, along with physical design in terms of engineering, architecture, photography and other forms of art. Events include weekly chapter meetings and workshops, as well as a variety of hands-on events.
