University of Michigan School of Information professor Tiffany Veinot is a 2025 Center for Health and Research Transformation Health Policy fellow (CHRT). The semester-long fellowship brings researchers, legislators and nonprofit leaders together to learn more about the legislative process.

“I am looking forward to learning more about how legislative processes work from my cohort-mates, didactic instruction, and visits to local, state and federal government agencies,” Veinot says. “As part of this, I look forward to the opportunity to forge connections with legislators, which is essential for conceptualizing and advancing my future research directions.”

Veinot is UMSI’s Joan C Durrance collegiate professor and holds professorship appointments at the Medical School and the School of Public Health. She previously served as UMSI’s associate dean for faculty. As a CHRT fellow, Veinot is especially excited to learn more about opportunities for her health informatics research to inspire policy changes on the government level.

Veinot, an expert on health information technology, is interested in using information systems and services to improve the health outcomes of marginalized populations. Her research primarily investigates the design and implementation of intervention strategies to help reduce health disparities.

“I am interested in strengthening and expanding my policy-relevant research through the fellowship,” Veinot says. “there is more potential for impact if I can bring research findings and data to the attention of policy makers, and make such findings more meaningful and useful for them.”

The orientation for the fellowship will focus on the legislative process, Michigan state government structure, the research process and challenges in building sustainability for nonprofit organizations. Former fellows have served in key legislative positions in Michigan and Washington, DC, influencing state and federal policy.
