Vydiswaran: AI could help flag dangerous alcohol use before surgery
Friday, 01/26/2024
Consuming alcohol before a surgery could lead to several complications, and patients don’t always tell doctors alcohol is in their system.
In a new study by University of Michigan School of Information associate professor VG Vinod Vydiswaran, researchers found artificial intelligence may be used to detect alcohol consumption before a surgery.
The study, cited by The Washington Post, provides a new method to identify alcohol-related risks by assessing a patient's history and flagging risky alcohol use.
The analysis could “lay the groundwork for efforts to identify other risks in primary care and beyond, with appropriate validation” Vydiswaran says.
