PhD in Information application fee waivers

This page deals exclusively with application fee waivers related to the PhD in Information program at the University of Michigan School of Information.

Two entities provide application fee waivers for the School of Information’s PhD in Information program. 

  1. Some waivers are administered by the Rackham Graduate School. Please review the Application Fee and Waivers page on the Rackham website for instructions and eligibility requirements.
  2. Other waivers for the PhD in Information program are administered by the School of Information. Applicants may be eligible based on membership, affiliation or completion of one of the following: 

U-M and UMSI affiliations

  • University of Michigan Blavin Scholars
  • U-M Certificate in the Foundations of Public Health (CFPH) alumni or on track to complete certificate before admitting term begins
  • U-M Exchange Program -- University of Freiburg in Germany and University of Seville in Spain
  • U-M Future Public Health Leaders Program (FPHLP) alumni
  • U-M SPH Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) alumni
  • Completion of eligible Coursera specializations: Public Library Management, Python 3 Programming, Python for Everybody: Specialization
  • University of Michigan staff member
  • A UMSI Readmit or Non-Candidate for Degree (NCFD) applicant
  • Current University of Michigan masters students seeking to add a dual degree with UMSI
  • University of Michigan students and alumni who utilized the Go Blue Guarantee
  • University of Michigan students and alumni who utilized the HAIL Scholarship

Service affiliations

How to apply for an application fee waiver 

  • These instructions are exclusively for the PhD in Information program at the School of Information. For application fee waiver information related to other University of Michigan degrees, please contact the relevant academic program, or review the materials for undergraduate admissions, or Rackham Graduate School.
  • When requesting an application fee waiver for the PhD in Information program, you must submit your waiver request before submitting your program application.
  • All requests must be submitted at least 72 hours (three days) before the application deadline. We encourage you to request a fee waiver as soon as possible after starting the application, to ensure you receive your fee waiver code/document prior to the deadline. We are unable to refund an application fee if you submit your program application before receiving confirmation of your waiver.
  • To apply for an application fee waiver for the PhD in Information program, please complete the UMSI Doctoral Program Fee Waiver Request Form. The PhD Admissions Team will review your Fee Waiver Request submission and notify you of the outcome within 5-7 business days of your request submission.
